To establish a typology of leadership in firms seems beyond reach, so this article proposes a sketch . Two dimentions have to be crossed to produce a grid of leadership typologies : the one, cultural, is rooted in sociology and history (Its formative elements are : the influence of pre-industrial elites, the parasitical relation with the State, the French working class's radicalism, and the Catholicism of the Counter-Reformation) ; the order, socioeconomic, helps distinguish among firms according to their «nature» (big or small businesses) and according to the means of recruitment and the predilections of their leaders.Produire une typologie du patronat semble hors de portée, aussi l'auteur ne nous en annonce-t-il que «l'esquisse ».
