La monarchie et la lutte contre les loups en Dauphiné dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle

Monarchy and the fight against wolves in the Dauphiné during the second half of the 18th century. The data about wolves in the Dauphiné during the 18th century tell us about the extent of their presence and the daily threat that they were representing in the province, but also attest to the efficiency of the fight led against them from the be-ginning of the century. The eradication of wolves has been encouraged through the payment of regular allowances : we have at our disposai a yearly account of the allowances paid to hunters from 1751 to 1788. The analysis of this account allows to testify that the presence of wolves has been constandy diminishing throughout the second half of the century. it shows that this fight was particularly vigorous in the districts of Grenoble and Vienne, and it can be noted that it came with the building of a new road between Lyons and Grenoble. On the eve of the French Révolution, if the wolf was still constituting a threat in the Haut-Dauphiné, it had almost disappeared in the more densely populated plains.Les données dont nous disposons concernant les loups en Dauphiné au XVIIIe siècle attestent de l'ampleur de sa présence et de la quotidienneté de la menace qu'il représentait dans cette province, mais aussi de l'efficacité de la lutte menée contre lui dès le début du siècle. L'élimination du loup fut encouragée par le versement d'indemnités régulières ; de 1751 à 1788 nous disposons, année après année, d'un état de ces indemnités versées aux chasseurs. Leur analyse permet de constater que la présence du loup fat en constante diminution dans la seconde moitié du siècle. Elle montre que cette lutte fat menée avec une particulière vigueur dans les élections de Grenoble et de Vienne, et l'on peut noter qu'elle accompagna la construction de la nouvelle route entre Lyon et Grenoble. A la veille de la Révolution, si le loup restait encore menaçant dans le Haut-Dauphiné, il avait presque disparu des zones de plaine les plus densément habitées.Favier René.
