L'hôpital de la Charité à Lille : le thème du château

Between 1866 and 1873, A. Mourcou builds the Hôpital de la Charité in Lille. Besides the problems linked to the building of a hospital and the development of scientific knowledge, an architectural image specific of this building can be made out. It reveals a choice of forms and ornaments originating in the architect's own temper and in the fashions of the time. A. Mourcou was born in Lille and trained by C.C. Benvignat, in charge of the architecture course in the Ecoles Académiques. Influenced by the major constructions of his time, he develops in Sainte-Eugénie's a historicist but reasoned architecture. Drawing on the theme of the castle and of its complement, the park, he can be thought of as a true Second-Empire eclectic.A. A côté des problèmes spécifiques de l'hôpital, liés à l'état de la science, se dégage une image architecturale propre à ce bâtiment. Elle révèle un choix de formes et de décor issu du tempérament de l'architecte et des modes de son temps. A. Mourcou est lillois, formé par C.C. Benvignat responsable du cours d'architecture aux Ecoles Académiques. Influencé par les grands travaux de son époque il développe à Sainte-Eugénie une architecture historiciste mais aussi raisonnée. En faisant appel au thème du château et de son élément complémentaire, le parc, il procède en véritable éclectique du Second Empire.A. Mourcou bouwt van 1866 tot 1873 het hospitaal de la Charité te Rijsel. Hij moet daarbij rekening houden met een aantal specifieke gegevens in ver- band met de stand van de wetenschap maar schept ook een eigen architectuur met vormen en versieringen die passen bij zijn temperament en bij de mode. A. Mourcou is Rijselaar en kreeg zijn vorming bij C.G. Benvignat, docent architectuur aan de plaatselijke Ecoles Académiques. Onder invloed van de grote werken ontwikkelt hij te St. -Eugénie een architectuur vol historiciteit en rede- lijkheid. Door het motief te gebruiken van het kasteel en het park als zijn complement, toont hij zich een echt eclectisch kunstenaar uit het Tweede Keizerrijk.Durande Agnès.
