Why did Lille undertake the construction of a large Gothic style Cathedral church in 1854 ? Why was it meant to be more perfect than those erected in the Middle Ages ? This is due to a current of thought originating in England in the middle of the XVIIIth century advocating a return to the Tudor past rather than following any longer the style imposed from Rome. This movement coincided with a return to nature, to the development of nationalistic feelings... It then spread to Germany, then to France. It is the Romantic age through which France will re-discover its mediaeval past. Soon, one will move from the mere restauration of ancient monuments to the wish to build from scratch monuments more perfect than their models... Thus the competion...
