Since 1990, the creation of lUFM's and the ensuing implementation of a new teacher training for primary school teachers, has involved a redefinition of the teaching job. This process of transformation of the activity through the improvement of its status, and its training has led to a renewed function, in the way of professionality. This reform has led to the creation of two different teaching staffs : the school masters (instituteurs) and the school teachers (professeurs des écoles). This "two-headed" profession seems to us to involve an acute identity problem.
