Poblamiento romano en la Sierra Minera de Cartagena

The geological environment of Carthagena's Sierra Minera has throughout history favoured a rich and varied mineralisation, which has been the motive of intense economic profit. Activity has been so intense over the centuries in the Sierra that there exist a great many deposits in connection with the exploitation of mines. They have been systematically recorded for the first time by Professor Domergue during the sixties, the recording being completed in 1994 by the archeological map of La Union's city council. The study of the various investigated deposits has led us to define several phases during the Roman occupation of the territory. The first phase wich runs from the end of the third century B.C. down to the first half of the first century B.C. is characterised by a proliferation of bases at strategic points in connection with the mining activities of extraction and smelting. The second phase, on the contrary, corresponds to the agricultural settlements which began in Augustan times and gradually lost strength towards the end of the second century A.D. Ultimately, during the Low Empire, Late Antiquity and the Byzantine era, the deposits have grown sparse and scarce.La constitution géologique de la Sierra Minera de Carthagène a favorisé une minéralisation riche et variée, source de grands profits économiques tout au long de l'histoire. Cette activité intense explique la grande quantité de gisements archéologiques en rapport avec l'exploitation de mines qui, dans les années 60, ont été pour la première fois répertoriées de façon systématique par C. Domergue. Ce relevé a été complété en 1994 par la Carte Archéologique de la municipalité de La Union. L'étude des différents gisements examinés nous a incité à distinguer plusieurs phases dans l'occupation romaine de ce territoire. La première phase, qui s'étend de la fin du Ille siècle av. J.-C. au milieu du 1er siècle avant J.-C, se caractérise par une prolifération d'établissements situés en des points stratégiques, en rapport avec les activités minières d'extraction et de fonderie. La deuxième phase correspond à des établissements agricoles qui ont commencé à l'époque augustéenne et se sont affaiblis peu à peu vers la fin du Ile siècle après J.-C. Finalement, au cours du Bas Empire, de l'Antiquité Tardive et de l'Epoque Byzantine, on n'a repéré qu'une occupation résiduelle.Berrocal Caparros Maria del Carmen.
