Euripides in the theatre. This paper addresses the question « What gives the plays of Euripides lasting significance in the theatre ? » and attempts to answer it by looking at the interplay between the world of the theatre and the world of the drama in a particular play, Hippolytus. The world of the theatre encompasses the physical context of the performance, the contemporary social situation, the knowledge and expectations of the audience, while the world of the drama is the imaginary place, time and persons created by the fiction of the play.
