Euripides in the theatre. This paper addresses the question « What gives the plays of Euripides lasting significance in the theatre ? » and attempts to answer it by looking at the interplay between the world of the theatre and the world of the drama in a particular play, Hippolytus. The world of the theatre encompasses the physical context of the performance, the contemporary social situation, the knowledge and expectations of the audience, while the world of the drama is the imaginary place, time and persons created by the fiction of the play. The interplay between the two can be seen in Hippolytus in the handling of the two choral groups (the women of Trozen and the followers of Hippolytus), the presentation of the divine purposes, the us...
