Het spel en de spelers. Actuele literaire vertaalopvattingen in het Nederlandse taalgebied

In this article the author deals with the difference between translating literature and literary translation, discussing in particular the translation of literary style. He examines to what extent and in which way the translator is visible in his text. The author’s proposal is to start from the translator’s views on translation as apparent from the texts themselves and their context. Measuring the effect of views on translation is crucial, discussed in this article by way of two topical debates in the Dutch-language area. From this discussion it emerges that the choice for a specific translational style is related to the literary objective the translator set himself and to the way in which he tries to realize this objective through stylistic means. His view on the source text compels the translator to make choices, prompted by the situation he works in and by the views on translation that he holds. An attempt to uncover topical views on translation turns out to reveal opposing standpoints mainly. A possible explanation for this may be implicit in the nature of the views on translation themselves.qui lui sont inspirés par les circonstances de travail et par sa position de traducteur. Une explication possible est contenue dans les caractéristiques des positions de traducteur elles-mêmes.In het artikel behandelt de auteur het verschil tussen literatuur vertalen en literair vertalen en gaat hij in het bijzonder in op het vertalen van literaire stijl. Voorts wordt nagegaan in welke mate en hoe de vertaler zichtbaar is in zijn tekst. Het voorstel is om daarbij vooral af te gaan op zijn vertaalopvattingen, zoals die blijken uit de teksten zelf en uit de context ervan. Cruciaal is het meten van het effect van vertaalopvattingen, wat in het artikel wordt besproken aan de hand van twee actuele debatten in het Nederlandse taalgebied. Uit het betoog blijkt dat de keuze voor een bepaalde vertaalstijl staat of valt met een visie van de vertaler op het literaire doel dat hij stelt, en op de manier waarop dat doel stilistisch gerealiseerd kan worden. Die visie noopt de vertaler tot keuzes, die hij zelf neemt en die hem ingegeven worden door de situatie waarin hij werkt en de vertaalopvattingen die hij hanteert. Een poging om actuele vertaalopvattingen te achterhalen blijkt vooral tegengestelde standpunten op te leveren.
