In this article the author deals with the difference between translating literature and literary translation, discussing in particular the translation of literary style. He examines to what extent and in which way the translator is visible in his text. The author’s proposal is to start from the translator’s views on translation as apparent from the texts themselves and their context. Measuring the effect of views on translation is crucial, discussed in this article by way of two topical debates in the Dutch-language area.
