Picardie Towns, Citadels of Catholicism. In the last third of the XVIth century, Picardie was one of the provinces siding the more strongly with the Ligue. What were the reasons of this early, massive and lasting involvement ? If the motives underlying this attitude are, obviously, complex, the primacy of religion looks all the same undoubtable. Indeed, to understand the call to arms of the years 1580-1590, it is essential to have a clear view of the extend of the fight the towns of Picardie waged at a very early date against the implementation of Reformation within their walls. The various means they put into practice, essentially since the 1560s, were indeed very efficient, to such an extent that Protestantism entered a phase of recession in the next decade. Now, given the difficulties Reformation met to take roots in the province, and that in spite of the far from negligible part played by the local nobility and even by some municipal magistrates, this reaction of defence may look somewhat disproportionate. As a matter of fact, beyond the deeply-rooted faith most of the bourgeois display towards the "religion of their fathers", other, more specific, reasons account for this relentlessness against the Protestants. These reasons may be summed up in two words : safety and autonomy. These towns, keepers of the borders, fear the danger represented for the safety of the kingdom by the Huguenot troops, in rebellion against the King, and the eventuality of an extension of the insurrection stirred up by the Protestants in the Netherlands. On the other hand, the municipal magistrates, fiercely attached to the privileges that guarantee the autonomous government of their cities, find it difficult to tolerate that, thanks to the religious conflict, the Huguenot leaders, or the King's agents, have more and more frequent opportunities to interfere with the running of their cities. Thus, far before 1576, and of course before 1588, several essential ingredients of the Ligue outburst have already appeared in Picardie.Dans le dernier tiers du XVIe siècle, la Picardie fut l'une des provinces les plus ligueuses du royaume. Quels furent les ressorts de cet engagement précoce, massif et durable ? Si les motivations de ce comportement sont, évidemment, complexes, la primauté du mobile religieux semble néanmoins incontestable. En effet, pour comprendre cette levée de boucliers des années 1580-1590, il importe de prendre la mesure de la lutte que les villes picardes ont menée très tôt contre l'implantation de la Réforme dans leurs murs. Les divers moyens qu'elles mirent en œuvre, surtout à partir des années 1560, furent d'ailleurs très efficaces, à tel point que le protestantisme entra dans une phase de recul dès la décennie suivante. Or, au regard des difficultés que la Réforme rencontra pour s'enraciner dans la province, et ce, en dépit du rôle non négligeable joué par la noblesse locale et même certains édiles, cette réaction défensive des villes peut paraître quelque peu disproportionnée. En fait, au-delà de la fidélité viscérale que la plupart des bourgeois manifestent envers la "religion de leurs pères", d'autres raisons, plus spécifiques, expliquent cet acharnement à l'en- contre des protestants. Ces raisons tiennent en deux mots : sécurité et autonomie. Car, ces villes, gardiennes de la frontière, redoutent le danger que constituent pour la sûreté du royaume les troupes huguenotes, rebelles au roi, et l'éventualité d'une extension de l'insurrection fomentée par les protestants aux Pays-Bas. D'autre part, les magistrats municipaux, farouchement attachés aux privilèges qui garantissent le gouvernement autonome de leur cité, tolèrent mal qu'à la faveur du conflit religieux, les chefs huguenots ou les agents du roi viennent de plus en plus souvent se mêler de leurs affaires. Ainsi, bien avant 1576 et à fortiori 1588, plusieurs composantes essentielles de la Ligue sont déjà réunies en Picardie.De Picardische steden, burchten van het catholicisme. In het laatste derde van de XVIde eeuw was Picardie een van de meest Ligagezinde provincies in het koninkrijk. Wat ging er schull achter dit vroeg, massief en duurzaam engagement ? Mag er dan al sprake zijn van een complexe motivering, dan weegt de goldsdienst toch het zwaarst door. Om inder daad het algemeen verzet in dejaren 1580-1590 te begrijpen moet men nagaan hoe heftig de Picardische steden zeer vroeg gestreden hebben tegen de inplanting van de Hervorming binnen hun muren. De verschillende middelen die zij daarvoor aanwendden, vooral sedert 1560, waren zeer efficient want het protestantisme ging in het volgende decennium achteruit. Rekening houdend met de moeilijkheden die het protestantisme moest overwinnen om in de provincie door te dringen ook in weerwil van de lokale adel die een niet te verwaariozen roi speelde, net als sommige bestuurders, valt het op dat de defensieve reactie wat buiten proportie was. Er was natuurlijk de gehechtheid van van de meeste burgers aan de "godsdienst van de voorouders", maar daarnaast nog andere meer specifieke redenen die de hardnekkigheid tegen de protestanten verklaren. Het gaat om twe zaken : veiligheid en autonomie. Deze steden die de grens bewaken vrezen het gevaar van de troepen van de Hugenoten, rebellen tegen de koning, en een eventuele uitbreiding van de door de protestanten geleide opstand in de Nederlanden. Anderzijds willen de gemeentelijke magistraten die sterk hechten aan de privilégies, de garantie van een autonoom bes-tur van de stad, zo weinig mogelijk tussenkomsten van Hugenotenleiders of van agenten van de koning in het bestuur naar aanleiding van een godsdienstoorlog. Zo zijn er, lang voor 1576 en a fortiori 1588, al veel essentiele voor- waarden voor de Liga aanwezig in Picardie.Carpi Olivia. Les villes picardes, citadelles du catholicisme..
