Roman catholic extremism — which arose suddenly by the great slaughter of 1562 — raised up a real activity of the Holy League faction at the end of the reign of Henry the III. As a matter of fact, the king's stay in Tours compelled the League's supporters to behave secretly. This zeal still stirred up the anti-protestanty riots of 1621, in the beginning of XVIIth century.
