Yeats works out his conception of the symbol against the literary background of the end of the century when symbolist aesthetics begins to affect drama and when occultism strengthens the interest for the symbol ; he is not alien either to the artistic and literary movements of Great Britain. Taking up Coleridge's distinction, he thinks that a symbol is a product of the imagination, whereas allegory belongs to fancy. He distinguishes « emotional symbols » which are essentially personal, and « intellectual » ones belonging to tradition. Great literature emerges from the dialectic interaction of the antithetical imagination of the mask and of visionary imagination ; in both cases, art is symbolical. His symbolist approach is a literary theory and a metaphysical belief. The doctrine of correspondences encourages him in his process of symbolic associations. The shaping of a symbol functions according to a method of superimposition and syncretism. A symbol can suggest its opposite. Symbolist idealism naturally turns towards this elsewhere that myths offer. The symbols, once they are made concrete, insert themselves into the poetic pattern. They lead us to the Great Memory, a king of collective unconscious. This exploration of the unconscious is in keeping with that of the Symbolists abroad.
