Yeats works out his conception of the symbol against the literary background of the end of the century when symbolist aesthetics begins to affect drama and when occultism strengthens the interest for the symbol ; he is not alien either to the artistic and literary movements of Great Britain. Taking up Coleridge's distinction, he thinks that a symbol is a product of the imagination, whereas allegory belongs to fancy. He distinguishes « emotional symbols » which are essentially personal, and « intellectual » ones belonging to tradition. Great literature emerges from the dialectic interaction of the antithetical imagination of the mask and of visionary imagination ; in both cases, art is symbolical.
