Literary and historical means of the Alexander portrait: the use of barbarians in Arrian’s Anabasis. In Arrian’s Anabasis three levels in the use of the image of barbarians may be distinguished: (1) Arrian’s account itself, where this use is rather limited and tends to be strictly neutral; (2) Alexander’s own words (or attributed to him), which make ample use of the stereotyped antithesis between Greeks and barbarians; (3) Arrian’s assessment of Alexander’s behaviour, in which the barbarians are used as negative standards.
