Abstract. For the past three years, small towns have been the major interest for the national commission of urban geography, as shown by the following papers dealing with France as a whole and with the different types of French regions. As far as the whole of France is concerned, the analysis points out : 1. the growth-rate of small towns (1.7 % a-year in 1961-1968) which is very like the medium towns one, 2. the greatest importance of industrial tows, 3. the quick development of services, 4. the more and more restricted regional influence together with the increase of national links.
