This article is a review of the situations and the development perspectives of small and medium-sized towns in Western European countries. As a vital component of regional and local development, small and medium-sized towns provide a link between the local and international economies. They play a vital role in global production systems. After a discussion on the definition of small and medium-sized towns, the authors analyse the dynamics of small and medium-sized towns in the general process of urban growth and point out the sensibility of these cities to regional contexts.
