Ni catholiques, ni protestants : les Juifs de Montréal

The arrival in Montréal, at the very beginning of the twentieth century, of an important wave of Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe heralded a new phase in the perception that each of the so-called founding linguistic communities had of their respective institutional network. The Jews, who constituted the first non-christian collectivity to take root in Québec, imposed on the Anglo-Protestants and Franco-Catholics that they define more clearly their identity, thus ending a period of relative cultural unanimity. The Canadian state, also based on a dualistic francophone and anglophone model, was equally challenged by the presence of the Jewish newcomers, notably the Québec school administrations which had legally developed a strictly Christian confessional structure. This article basically examines how in Montréal the Jewish migration redefined the relationship between majorities and minorities.L'arrivée à Montréal, au tout début du siècle, d'une importante vague d'immigrants juifs en provenance d'Europe de l'Est eut un impact considérable sur la perception que les deux communautés linguistiques dites fondatrices avaient de leur réseau institutionnel respectif. Première collectivité immigrante composée de non-chrétiens, les Juifs forcèrent les Anglo-protestants et les Franco-catholiques à se définir eux-mêmes plus ouvertement et à terme, par leur seule présence, l'histoire culturelle unanimiste qui avait prévalu jusque-là au Québec. L'État canadien, lui aussi basé sur une perception dualiste, francophone et anglophone, fut également interpelé par la nouvelle présence juive, notamment le réseau scolaire confessionnel chrétien qu'il sanctionnait de son poids légal au Québec. C'est de ce rapport nouveau entre majorités et minorités à Montréal, tel qu'enclenché par l'immigration juive, qu'il est donc surtout question dans cet article.Anctil Pierre.
