Le pouvoir politique en Sénégambie, des origines à la conquête coloniale

Kingdoms formed after the dislocation of the Djolof Empire borrowed their political organization. The monarchy established can be qualified as " Lamanal " because the rulers of the land held power. The council was made up by these rulers who chose the sovereign and the " diaraf " (Prime Minister). As head of State, the sovereign (brak, bur, damel) was probably considered as a god who was responsible for the prosperity and the spiritual unity of the country, but in fact, he had no direct contact with political reality. This political System will undergo significant transformations under the influence of for e.g. Islam and slave trade. We can then witness a secularization of the kingdom, an increasing participation of sovereigns in trade, an increasing tendency toward centralization, a greater participation of the captives of the crown and a décline in the authority of the " Lamanes ". La monarchie ainsi mise en place peut être qualifiée de lamanale car les maîtres de la terre (lamanes) détenaient la réalité du pouvoir. En effet, ceux-ci constituaient le conseil des grands électeurs qui choisissait le Souverain et le grand diaraf ou premier ministre. Sans doute au sommet de l'État le souverain (brak, bur, damel) était considéré comme un dieu responsable de la prospérité du pays et garant de son unité spirituelle, mais en fait il n'avait aucune prise directe sur la réalité politique. Ce système politique subira d'importantes transformations sous l'influence de facteurs multiples dont les plus notables furent l'Islam et la traite négrière. On assiste alors à une sécularisation de la royauté, à une participation toujours plus grande des souverains à la direction des affaires, à un développement constant de la centralisation, au rôle grandissant des captifs de la couronne et au déclin de l'autorité des lamanes.Gueye M'Baye.
