Les lieux de culte du diocèse de Saint-Papoul à la fin du Moyen Age

The bishopric of Saint-Papoul wasfounded on July llth 1317 by Pope John XXII. The bull defining the boundaries of the diocese published on February 22nd 1318 mentions fifty churches, chapels, priories or monasteries. The investigation of the terriers, notarial registers of series G and from the XVIth and XVth centuries, reveals various places of worship, not mentioned on this list, increasing the actual number threefold. The statute of the churches mentioned is not always evident : parish churches, chapels of ease, simple chapels - it is not always possible to tell which. The country churches were very numerous at the time and probably represent relies of communities of the Xth and XIth centuries ; some of these churches are sometimes mentioned in the XVth century as ancient parish churches. The cemetary is next to the church as a rule, but other cemetaries outside the urban centres continue to be used. They are sometimes of recent foundation, next to hospitals ; more often they are near a country chapel, where a urban centre may have existed previously. The Church made every effort to sanctify them by building chapels, by celebrating services, generally Palm Sunday ; attempts were made to enclose them to protect themfrom straying cattle. During the XIVth and the XVth centuries, this région was preyed on by highwaymen. The smaller population wasforced to bear high taxes ; money was lacking to maintain the places of worship, being reserved first for the parish church. This led to the dilapidation, and sometimes the disappearance of country churches, and even in the towns, the buildings were in bad repair. The diocese of Saint-Papoul appears to have been in a rather poor condition at the end of the Middle Ages, 10 % of the places of worship (mainly country chapels), seem to have been destroyed in the course of the XlVth century; nevertheless the majority of the destruction takes place in the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.L'évêché de Saint-Papoul est créé le 11 juillet 1317 par Jean XXII, la bulle de délimitation du diocèse publiée le 22 février 1318 mentionne cinquante églises, chapelles, prieurés ou monastères. L'étude des pouillés, registres notariaux, séries G et H des XIVe et XVe siècles a fait apparaître divers lieux de culte ne figurant pas sur cette liste, multipliant pratiquement leur nombre par trois. L'incertitude est assez fréquente quant au statut des églises mentionnées : églises paroissiales, annexes, simples chapelles ne sont pas toujours discernables. Les églises rurales sont alors très nombreuses, survivances probables de communautés des Xe et XIe siècles ; certaines de ces églises sont parfois mentionnées au XVe comme étant d'anciennes églises paroissiales. Le cimetière jouxtant l'église paroissiale est de règle mais d'autres cimetières, extérieurs aux agglomérations continuent de fonctionner. Ils sont parfois de fondation récente, liés à des hôpitaux ; le plus souvent, ils sont situés près d'une chapelle rurale, là où un habitat a pu exister antérieurement. L'Eglise s'efforce de les sanctifier en y faisant édifier des chapelles, en y célébrant des offices, généralement celui des Rameaux ; elle le fait clôturer pour le protéger des divagations du bétail- Pendant les XIVe et XVe siècles, cette région est une zone de brigandage où sévissent les routiers. La population, moins nombreuse, est pressurée d'impôt ; on manque d'argent pour entretenir les lieux de culte. L'argent est réservé en priorité à l'église paroissiale. Ceci entraîne la dégradation, parfois la disparition d'églises champêtres, et, même en ville, les édifices sont en mauvais état. Le diocèse de Saint-Papoul apparaît dans un état assez médiocre à la fin du Moyen Age, 10 % des lieux de culte (surtout les chapelles rurales) semblent avoir disparu courant XIVe siècle, toutefois l'essentiel des disparitions s'effectue aux XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.Marandet Marie-Claude.
