Le château de Gicon (Gard)

In the Northeast part of the Gard department, in the heart of a calcareous massif, the bushes were recently cleared away from the castle of Gicon. Built on a very steep horst, the first buildings are inserted in the cliff whereas the most recent ones are built on an outfitted platform. The vestiges, for the most part, are grouped together in sectors: in the Eastern side, three rows of communicating rooms one of which is set up for the defence of an entrance; on the Western side, a wall with putlog-holes, crowned by the foot of a vault, the remains of a vertically split bell tower; in the Northern part, a «maison forte» built on the right of the breast walls of the platform. The castrum is mentioned in 1211 and the eastern building must have been constructed before that date. The " maison forte" was built, by royal license, in 1312.Au nord-est du département du Gard, au coeur d’un massif calcaire, le château de Gicon a été récemment dégagé des broussailles. Construit sur un horst très pentu, ses premiers bâtiments sont engagés dans le rocher tandis que les plus récents sont édifiés sur une plate-forme aménagée. Pour l’essentiel les vestiges sont regroupés par secteurs: à l’est, trois enfilades de pièces communicantes dont une organisée pour la défense d’une entrée; à l’ouest, un mur scandé de trous de boulins, sommé par un départ de voûte, reste d’une tour-beffroi sectionnée verticalement; au nord, une maison-forte inscrite au droit des murs de soutènement de la plate-forme. Le castrum est mentionné en 1211 et le bâti oriental doit être édifié avant cette date. La maison forte est édifiée, sur autorisation royale, en 1312.Maigret Chantal. Le château de Gicon (Gard).
