La tradition juive confrontée à la modernité politique : l'exemple des rabbins français au XIXe siècle

For Judaism, the first political event ofthe century, following the emancipation of 1791, was the convening of the Grand Sanhedrin and the setting-up ofthe consistory, ordered by the imperial decrees of 1806, 1807 and 1808. These measures aimed to ensure control of the Jewish community and hasten its assimilation. This contribution studies this forced confrontation of Jewish tradition with modernity. The interpretation of Jewish law (the halakha) had to devise, without repudiating its beliefs, a new relationship with the authority of the State. On that depended the Jewish identity and perhaps the survival of French Judaism. The author sheds light on the difficult and courageous role the rabbis played in the face of secular powers, in the consistories, and their strategy for managing a crisis that induced the Jewish religion to make a perilous emotional and political investment in what was soon to become the patriotic cuit of the State - with its inevitable threat of de-Judaisation - and takes care to outline the long-term effects of these transformations.Le premier événement politique du siècle pour le judaïsme, après l'émancipation de 1791, est la convocation du Grand Sanhédrin et la création du consistoire par les décrets impériaux de 1806, 1807 et 1808 visant à assurer le contrôle de la communauté juive et à hâter son assimilation. On étudie ici cette confrontation forcée de la tradition juive et de la modernité. L'interprétation de la loi juive (la halakha) doit inventer sans se renier un nouveau rapport à l'autorité de l'État. Il y va de l'identité juive et peut-être de la survie du judaïsme français. C'est le rôle difficile et courageux des rabbins face aux laïques, dans les consistoires, leur stratégie pour gérer une crise qui provoque un périlleux investissement affectif et politique du culte juif dans le culte bientôt patriotique de l'État - avec son inévitable menace de déjudaïsation - que l'auteur met en lumière non sans esquisser les effets à long terme de ces mutations.Chouraqui Jean-Marc.
