Regionalism and cultural consumerism. — Geographers have always been interested in the region but they are surprisingly discreet concerning the debates which are being raised today by regionalist movements. A fundamental question must be asked however : Should territorial ideologies — that of region after that of nation — be accepted and endorsed or should they be dismantled, should that which makes them successful be analysed and their limitations observed ? Western societies are affluent societies and they use more and more of their riches in cultural consumerism which is evidence of the search for identity of their members.
