Gylou and the Geloudes belong to Byzantine and Post-Byzantine beliefs concerning the dangers of childbirth. These feminine figures endowed with supernatural powers whose principal function is to harm little children alternate between the world of men and demons and are closely related to notions of the evil eye and exotika. Belief in the activity of these figures leads to expressions of faith in the efficacity of Christian practices.
