According to an old common belief shared by archeologists, the worship of the emperor created by Augustus, and in a first time limited to the sole provinces directly ruled by the emperor, was started in the senatorial provinces by Vespasian. After a criticism of both the method and the content sustaining this belief, we tend to point out through a comparison of essentially epigraphic data, that this new custom is the result of Domitian's policy. This is true in the case of the Narbonnaise and of the Bétique, and — though with less certainty — of Africa and many other provinces.
