The work of Meister Eckhart belongs to the scholastic tradition according to which God's main Name is "I am", as in Exodus 3, 14, i.e. "I am Being". This view is different from that of the neoplatonist tradition for which God's Name is above all names: being is no longer identical with the Creator, but with creatures and is, as we read in the Liber de causis, "the first of things created." These two traditions meet in the work of St. Thomas, who brings together the One of Dionysius and the divine Esse situated beyond all beings which are and nonetheless are not Being.
