Economie performance under the plan : the Soviet Union and East Europe. In spite of unusually severe handicaps, the Soviet Union during her fifty-three years of existence has advanced from a relatively backward and predominantly agricultural country to an economic power second only to that of the United States. Figures computed by Western economists — though as a rule considerably lower than those released by the Soviets — still spell remarkable economic success in terms of overall, and more even in terms of industrial development.
