Representations in children through sémiotic processes Based on work on canonical use of object in 7 to 13 month-old infants, the authors argue for a social origin of psychological functions in the preverbal period. Drawing on the theoretical work of Vygotsky, they propose to extend the concept ofsemiotic mediation to the prelinguistic behaviors and to communication with others. It is shown that the canonical use of objects observed in triadic interactions is based on a complex construction of meanings which are first elaborated in the context of mother-infant interactions.
