The census of fossil echinoids found in archaeological sites shows that their utilisation by man was frequent from the Palaeolithic to the Gallo- Roman period. 1 17 sites have been recorded in France, including almost three hundred fossil echinoids, and another place, Mont-Vaudois in Haute-Saône, contained 2-3 cubic metres of these fossils in a single grave. A similar, less exhaustive, census made outside France enumerates about thirty sites with nearly 250 echinoids (including 200 for Dunstable Downs (GB) alone).
