The Nation's Housing is Changing. About 60,000 housing units have to be replaced each year - Between 1 982 and 1 987, 630.000 primary residences became unoccupied each year. Only 536,000 new occupants moved into them. Thus, there remained 94,000 empty units, most of which were abandoned. Some were destroyed, others became part of a new dwelling or were no longer used for housing purposes. On the other hand, new housing was created by the partitioning of old units and the conversion of work space or secondary residences.
