Islamic law and Royal hatred. Sarmad Shahîd Kâshânî, a sufî poet and martyr (d. 1659) Sarmad Shahîd was a Jew of Iranian origin who converted to Islam. He migrated to India around 1632. He adopted the custom of Hindu ascetics, and walked naked. He was sentenced to death by the Moghul emperor Awrangzeb and beheaded in 1659. The grounds upon which the sentence was delivered are highly arguable. The hatred of the emperor for his brother, the crown prince Dârâ Shokûh, who had played a great part in the promotion of Hinduism as a rival religion to Islam, seems to have been the real cause of his execution. Sarmad's «passion » is, but to a lesser degree, a remake of Hallâj's, who was executed in 922 in Bagdad. The heroism shown by Sarmad in his last moments looks as a denunciation of Fundamentalism.Sarmad Shahîd était un juif iranien converti à l'islam qui émigra en Inde en 1632. Il avait adopté la coutume des ascètes hindouistes et se promenait nu. Il fut condamné à mort par l'empereur moghol Awrangzîb et décapité en 1659. Les chefs d'accusation retenus contre lui sont discutables. La haine que l'empereur éprouvait pour son frère rival, Dârâ Shokûh, qui œuvra activement à la promotion de l'hindouisme comme religion concurrente à l'islam, semble être le motif réel de son exécution. La « passion » de Sarmad est une réplique mineure de celle de Hallâj, exécuté à Bagdad en 922.
