The loss of political power in the nineteenth century left the Indian Muslims with shattered illusions. At that hour of crisis, some religious scholars contemplated the idea of reform and religious renewal. Shah Isma-c-il was one such scholar who as a theologian, preacher and activist was qualified for such a task. After having taught and given fatwas in the Akbar Abadi mosque madrasah in Delhi for some time, Shah Isma-c-il suddenly joined hands with a süfi zealot, Sayyid Ahmad of Ra'e Bareli.
