The Mutilated and the Machines. Images of mutilated bodies and industrial rationalization during the Weimar Republic, Catherine Wermester. The First World War tragically brought man and machine face to face. In Weimar Germany the years that followed were marked by an intense debate on the relationship between modern society and technology in the heart of which was the question of the American industrial model. Close to the far left, the artistic avant-garde first used the man-machine figure to denounce capitalism. But the debate chan- ged shape with renewed economic growth.
