Méhémet-Ali au miroir des voyageurs français en Egypte

Veritable topos in travel literature on Egypt in the 19h century, the portrait of Muhammad AH, viceroy between 1805 and 1848, reveals the multiple expectations raised by the reformer pacha in France. A kind of industrial Bonaparte for most of the saint- simonians (Enfantin, Urbain...), who were engaged in his service during the 1830s, he is the object of more nuanced judgements by a certain number of other French travellers from the same era, who do not forget that Muhammad Ali had his milicia of Mamelouks massacred (1811) in order to establish his power definitively. Fueled by a drawing, then by a painting by Horace Vernet who represents this scene, the image of the «oriental despot» (Goupil-Fesquet, Renoüard de Bussierre...) yields a social criticism (Voilquin, Gasparin) that occasionally transforms into a tale of horror (Géramb, Du Camp). Certain travellers, however, prefer to emphasize the Pacha of Egypt's political and economic successes (Marmont, Marcellus), at the same time ignoring his autocratic form of government and the brutality with which he imposed his reforms. «Barbaric» or «civilized» ? Probably both at the same time, which is particularly disturbing for his visitors, insofar as Muhammad Ali reflects the mirrored image of a francophile ruler.Véritable topos des récits de voyage en Egypte au XIXe siècle, le portrait de Méhémet-Ali, vice-roi entre 1805 et 1848, révèle les attentes multiples que suscite le pacha réformateur en France. Sorte de Bonaparte industriel pour la plupart des saint-simoniens (Enfantin, Urbain...) qui se mettent à son service dans les années 1830, il fait l'objet de jugements plus contrastés chez nombre de voyageurs français contemporains, qui n'oublient pas que Méhémet-Ali fit massacrer sa milice de mamelouks (1811) pour asseoir définitivement son pouvoir. Alimentée par un dessin, puis par un tableau d'Horace Vernet qui représente cette scène, l'image du «despote oriental» (Goupil-Fesquet, Renoüard de Bussierre...) donne lieu à une critique sociale (Voilquin, Gasparin) qui vire parfois à la légende noire (Géramb, Du Camp). Certains voyageurs, pourtant, préfèrent mettre en valeur les succès politiques et économiques du pacha d'Egypte (Marmont, Marcellus), quitte à passer sous silence son mode de gouvernement autocratique et la brutalité avec laquelle il imposa ses réformes. «Barbare» ou «civilisé» ? Sans doute les deux à la fois, ce qui est particulièrement troublant pour ses visiteurs, dans la mesure où Méhémet-Ali leur renvoie en miroir l'image d'un souverain francophile.Moussa Sarga.
