How did photography portray exotic societies in the 19th century ? There seem to be two opposite approaches. One rests upon the romantic reverie on the singular and self-contained œsthetic creativeness of these societies. The other is rooted in the positivist desire to reduce their otherness to a series of set and lifeless types, pictured in a naturalist and racialist perspective. The divide gets highly blurred when the two approaches merge, as they do in Curtis 's 40000 photoprints. In those he depicts the «vanishing race» of the pre-conquest North-American Indians, actually creating them with a great display of native attire and elaborate staging, in an attempt to give back to their hapless descendants their essence, beauty and dignity.La...
