In 1988 an 1989 West Germany experienced an unexpectedly strong economic growth. This was a consequence of a vigourous external demand and a less restrictive economic policy. Since seven years ago, savings have been recovered more vigorously here than elsewhere, allowing West Germany to yield an increasing current account surplus which peaked last year. The weakness of domestic demand compared to other developed countries is mainly due to households' consumption. Despite a rather less favorable income distribution, the saving rate contrasts with that prevailing in the rest of the OECD area.
