During the last few decades, the developing countries have experienced a period of maximum growth. Between 1950 and 1980, the gross industrial product per head has increased as rapidly in the poorer countries as in the developed ones. Correlations between an index of population growth and gross industrial product per head often turn out not to be significant, but when the figures are divided into sub-periods, coefficients which were positive during the 1950s and 1960s turn out to be negative during the 1970s.
