SUMMARY The isle-aux-Coudres, located North East oj Quebec, was peopled at the beginning oj the 18//г century by French settlers whose descendants constitute a highly inbred population. The active population mainly consists oj jarmers and " emplacitaires " {day - labourers or sailors). As birth-control was not practised until recently, the intervals between births remained almost unchanged, they even became shorter ajter the turn oj the century. The fertility increase oj this " natural " population cannot be explained by the spread of bottle-jeeding which has been adopted very recently.
