The study of the demography of Valenciennes between 1800 and the beginning of the XXth century is an evidence of its specific evolution a high birth rate, a death rate also higher than the national average, but a very low marriage rate. The demographical pattern of Valenciennes appears thus to be relatively archaic. On the whole the population increases but moderately, the burden connected to industrialisation weighing mostly on the surrounding boroughs, and in the city itself, the increase is mostly due to migrations inside the region. Thus the age pyramid is characterised by the relative importance of the younger elements.
