Jacques Vallin. World Population Projections of the United Nations. The latest projection for the population of the world was published by the United Nations in 1975, based on data available in 1973. For each country with more than 250,000 inhabitants, the projections use an assumption of mortality decline and a set of four different assumptions relating to the decline of fertility. Depending on the assumption used, world population in the year 2000 would lie between 5.8 and 7.2 thousand millions. The margin of uncertainty is due both to gaps in the available statistics and to lack of knowledge about the mechanisms underlying the movements in mortality and fertility. Whatever assumptions are used, world population will not become stationary...
