Abstract : Bantu languages have proved a good testing ground for tonal theories, due to their diversity. Not only do closely related languages show striking differences in their tonal realisations for cognate items, but tonal processes exhibit a similar variety (tone doubling, tone shift, tonal anticipation, etc.).
