Abstract Ethnography in its Context: The Colonial Administration and the Making of Identifies (Zanzibar). — In Zanzibar, the colonial state's interventions tended to break up social networks based on ritual gift-giving and take the place of traditional arrangements for regulating exchanges. It stimulated the emergence of individualiste behaviors. A few lawsuits about the devolution of family real estate in rural Swahili society are reviewed.
