The use of anticancer drugs in veterinary medicine raises several issues related to supply difficulties of cytotoxic drugs, and to the risks these substances pose for veterinary surgeons, their staff, the owners of the animal and the people living near them, and the environment. Most anticancer molecules are carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or teratogenic. To overcome the reservations of regulatory authorities on the capacity of veterinary surgeons to use cytotoxic anticancer agents, it is essential to include a detailed course on these drugs in the initial training of veterinary practitioners, followed by rigorous continuing education and information programs.
