The figure of the exile, as conceived by Quinet on the basis of personal experience, is the guardian of memory for a people liable to forget its political freedom. Three dangers threaten this people: that it will forget its submission, that essential words will be diluted into meaninglessness and lastly that it will content itself with an economic relation which eliminates the very memory of a political and spiritual life. The failure of the French Revolution to anchor politics in a new religion made possible the definitive exile of a nation and a whole people's estrangement. The exile, unable as he is to create religion on his own, must therefore preserve the memory of this unsatisfied demand, one that may have become impossible to satisfy...
