Historical iconology of French political caricature (XVIth - XXth centuries)

The subject of this article is the political caricatures produced in France from the Renaissance to the last decade of the XXth century showing the creation of a new pictorial language, a new "iconology". Throughout these periods, engravings exhibit an astonishing continuity in their attacks on government, based on issues linked to sex, money and tyranny. From the XVIth to the XVIIIth century, caricatural iconology was based mainly upon allegorical and medieval topics but since the French revolution the subjects of a majority of engravings are more personal, pointing out physical or psychological problems or referring to scandalous facts.L'article se propose de montrer comment se crée une iconologie de la caricature politique (c'est-à-dire la science de décrire et d'interpréter les images) en détaillant les signes qui la composent et en en constituant le vocabulaire graphique. Au cours des quatre siècles considérés, on est passé des références allégoriques et religieuses à un registre beaucoup plus laïcisé, voire trivial et familier. Le point d'inflexion peut être placé lors de la Révolution française. Cependant, il faut noter qu'il existe des invariants dans la critique : l'argent, le sexe et la tyrannie ou l'abus d'autorité
