The subject of this article is the political caricatures produced in France from the Renaissance to the last decade of the XXth century showing the creation of a new pictorial language, a new "iconology". Throughout these periods, engravings exhibit an astonishing continuity in their attacks on government, based on issues linked to sex, money and tyranny.
