Coastal natural sites conservation in the Nord -Pas-de-Calais (France) : Actors and policy The two Departments that make up the Nord -Pas de Calais Region in Northern France exhibit contrasting coasts. While 80 % of the coastline of the Nord Department has been strongly altered by humans, only 20 % of the Pas-de-Calais coastline shows some degree of alteration. The high population densities (over 300 in¬ habitants per km2) of this part of Northwestern Europe have resulted in very strong human pressure on the natural environment.
