On the eve of the Revolution, the literacy rate of Saint-Omer brides and bridegrooms exceeds 60% . After a pause in the middle of the century, improvements have been steady since 1750. The revolutionary period did not interrupt this evolution. The case of Saint-Omer is by no means original : like many other cities, one discovers the late access of women to instruction, a whole cultural hierarchy in keeping with profession and wealth, and sharp differences according to parishes.
