14. Vista do Cavalão (View from Cavalão), 1884. Johann Georg Grimm is notable for his contribution to landscape painting in Brazil. A German immigrant, he revolutionized the teaching of landscape painting in Brazil when he took his students at the Brazilian Academy of Fine Arts out-of-doors to paint direct1y from nature. Since this break with traditional pedagogy was unacceptable to the Academy, Grimm left and opened his own school. He and his students-many of the finest Brazilian landscapists of the next generation-were known as the Grupo Grimm and painted in the area around Niterói, in the State of Rio deJaneiro.
