It was not until the 1950s that the Brazilian government became more concerned with regional development, providing industrialization incentives through SUDENE (Northeast Development Superintendency). Most industry is concentrated in the cities of Fortaleza (CE), Recife (PE) and Salvador (BA). The latter is the largest industrial center in the region and its booming petrochemical industry is a most important industrial revenue source. Despite recent industrial growth, agricultural products including sugarcane, tobacco, rice, beans, cocoa, cotton, and manioc continue to be the mainstay of the region\u27s economy.
