In 1549, the Portuguese founded Salvador (which remained the capital of Brazil until 1763) in an attempt to establish a central administration to coordinate colonization and settlement. Northeastern sugarcane and tobacco estates dominated socioeconomic structures in the early colonial period until the Eighteenth century when the discovery of gold and diamonds in central Minas Gerais shifted Brazil\u27s economic focus to the Southeast region.
