Rome Redeems Athens? Livy, the Peloponnesian War, and the Conquest of Greece

International audienceWhen Livy describes Rome’s wars in Greece at the beginning of the 2nd century B.C., he does so in constant awareness of the distinguished prior history of those states who are falling under Roman sway. A significant part of that history is the Peloponnesian War. Livy alludes in passing to the war when Rome (at the request of Athens) takes up arms against Philip V of Macedon; but the Peloponnesian War plays a still more important role in his accounts of the wars against Sparta, and its defeat first by the Romans and subsequently by the Achaean general Philopoemen. Through allusions to Xenophon’s account of the Spartan defeat of Athens, Livy indicates that the Spartans now are suffering a similar fate to that which they inflictedon the Athenians.Quand Tite-Live raconte les guerres entreprises par Rome en Grèce au début du IIe siècle av.
