Les sols dans la tête. Pratiques et conceptions des sols d'agriculteurs vendéens

International audiencePractices and understanding of soils of Vendee farmers Limiting soil degradation as a key objective within the pursuit of sustainable agriculture involves seeking to understand how farmers think about and characterize their farm soils. This paper describes a series of three collective interviews conducted with three groups of farmers to document how they talk about soils. All members of each group were engaged one of three production methods: conservation agriculture, organic agriculture, or conventional agriculture. The results found that the farmers belonging to the three groups were interested in different soil characteristics. Farmers in soil conservation agriculture differed from organic farmers with respect to the use of their senses to characterize their soils and in their understanding of the soil as an entity with its own autonomy and operating logic. For them, soil is not merely a production factor. However, conservation agriculture farmers and organic farmers were similar in the importance they attached to soil organic matter. These two groups were similar too in the way they critique standard technical tools and agronomic knowledge, which are no longer relevant for their current practices. They also share a search for new technical and scientific frameworks. Farmers of the third group, who practice conventional agriculture (including standard moldboard ploughing), present an intermediate mode of understanding soil characteristics with respect to the two other groups.Limiter la dégradation des sols, dans l’objectif d’un développement agricole durable, nécessite de comprendre comment les agriculteurs conçoivent et caractérisent les sols de leurs exploitations. Une enquête a été menée auprès d’agriculteurs afin de saisir, à partir de leurs discours, leurs conceptions des sols. Cette enquête a pris la forme d’entretiens collectifs réalisés en Vendée auprès d’agriculteurs rassemblés, selon leur mode de production, dans trois groupes différents : en agriculture de conservation, en agriculture biologique ou en agriculture conventionnelle. Les résultats montrent que, selon leurs préoccupations pratiques, les agriculteurs des trois groupes ne s’intéressent pas aux mêmes aspects du sol. Les agriculteurs en agriculture de conservation des sols (ACS) se différencient ainsi le plus fortement des agriculteurs en agriculture biologique (AB) dans la façon dont ils disent mobiliser la diversité de leurs sens pour caractériser les sols, et dans leur manière d’appréhender le sol comme une entité autonome, ayant sa propre logique de fonctionnement. En revanche, ces types d’agriculteur en ACS et en AB sont proches dans la place centrale qu’ils accordent à la matière organique dans leur mode de production. Ils se retrouvent de même dans leur critique des outils techniques et connaissances agronomiques classiques, qui ne sont plus pertinents pour leurs pratiques. Les agriculteurs en agriculture conventionnelle (AL), qui, eux, pratiquent toujours le labour, présentent une richesse d’appréhension des caractéristiques du sol intermédiaire à celle des deux types précédents
